Irish Legislation

There are a number of acts and corresponding regulations which apply to the handling of Packaging Waste in Ireland:

Waste Management Act, 1996

Waste Management (Packaging) Regulations, 1997

Waste Management (Amendment Of Waste Management Act, 1996) Regulations, 1998

European Communities (Amendment Of Waste Management Act, 1996) Regulations, 1998

Waste Management (Packaging)(Amendment) Regulations, 1998

Waste Management (Amendment) Act, 2001

The "Waste Management (Packaging) Regulations, 2003" revise and replace previous regulations made in 1997, and subsequent amending regulations made in 1998, and are intended to facilitate the achievement by Ireland of the 50% packaging waste recovery target by end 2005 as set out in EU Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste. The regulations came into effect on 1 March 2003. The key points are summarised in Packaging Regulations 2003 - Key Points (pdf, 2p, 19 kb) .

The key points of the recent amendment which came into effect on 30 Dec 2004 are summarised in Packaging Regulations Amendment 2004 - Key Points (pdf, 2p, 22 kb) .
